The Prayer - July 20th

What's up fam!

I'm so excited to share a new song with you guys next month called, The Prayer!! This song is very near and dear to my heart and I genuinely can't wait for you to hear it. I wrote it in 2020 and I now play it at all of my live shows. So many people have come up to me after a show, with tears in their eyes, asking where they can find the song and it broke my heart that I had nothing to give them. So, I finally got it recorded and on July 20th it'll be yours.

With everything going on in 2020, the pandemic, unemployment, extreme weather, government shutdowns, the BLM movement, the election, as well as a slough of intense events in my own personal life, I felt really confused and anxious. Like most of us did. I didn't know what to do, how to help, or even how to feel about my own situation. My family was blessed in that we were financially secure and we were strong, healthy, and safe. But that wasn't the case for most people. And I felt guilty about that.

So, I sat at my keyboard and wrote this song (it's inspired by a song written by Victoria Canal, who I adore, and if you don't know who she is please look her up). I wrote it in the form of a prayer, hence the title, asking God and the powers that be, essentially, why do bad things happen? With so much frustration and evil going on in the world at the time, I felt as if the Universe had abandoned us. Left us to deal with the mess that we'd most certainly made. One of my favorite lines in the song describes this feeling well: "Is there a reason for believing in heaven and demons when it's hard to tell which one of them is around?"

This song is powerful and full of raw emotion, which is why I love playing it live. I wanted to capture that same energy in the recording, so it's stripped back to just me singing at the piano without a click track or meter. I hope it makes you feel something, raises some questions, and maybe even provides some answers. It's certainly done that for me. I love this song so much and I can't wait for you to hear it.

Much love,

BENZ
